Jack Shover
I am a marketing and communications professional. Always seeking to grow – I have worked in a multitude of environments and with folks of diverse backgrounds. From international organizations to small mom-and-pop operations, I have a knack for finding the greater story and human connection that drives us all. An Iowa State University alumnus – I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication and a minor in history.
I have been able to grow through my time at Sip Cafe and Mike’s Ice Cream, the Austin Independent School District (AISD), Construction Industry Institute (The University of Texas-Austin), Construction Publications, Inc. (CPI), Manatt’s, Inc., the Iowa State Daily and through leadership opportunities with the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.
At Sip Cafe and Mike’s Ice Cream, I have learned a great deal about the service industry and managing an organization as assistant manager and lead graphic designer. At Sip, I’ve handled leading a team of individuals and coordinating them to achieve greater organizational goals. As a graphic designer, I tailored menus, social media posts and posters to match voice and design across designs. Through our efforts as a team, we have reached new weekend sales records two months in a row.
I served AISD in seven different schools from the elementary to the high school levels. Each school and classroom presented its unique challenges daily, so it was always to adapt to each classroom and students needs, which could include providing accommodations for special needs students and even providing Spanish-language instructions. During my time at AISD, I thoroughly enjoyed teaching career preparation courses, such as engineering, construction, and graphic design.
I grew as a professional through my time at the Construction Industry Institute (CII) at The University of Texas-Austin as a Communications Coordinator. A non-profit research organization, CII is made up of around 140 organizations that drive engineering and construction industry advancement through academic research. CII has developed numerous industry renowned Best Practices, including Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) and Front-End Planning (FEP). My responsibilities within CII included developing relationships with our membership, academics and collaborators to assist in internal communications and develop web content to grow and strengthen CII’s membership and reach. I additionally headed a multitude of projects, including written and visual content including blogs, event photos, email blasts, and educational videos.
During my time with CPI, I have produced a vast array of print and digital content including customer testimonials, special event coverage, employee highlights, technological developments and industry trends that have reached audiences across North America. I was tasked with creating and implementing all of the localized content for Brandeis Machinery, Power Equipment Company, Continental Equipment Company, General Equipment & Supplies, and Diesel Machinery Inc. totaling 14 print and digital magazine issues a year. From customer testimonials to public relations events, I collaborated with regional managers and individual representatives to tailor grassroots content for their respective organizations to improve outreach and customer engagement. In addition, I contributed Search Engine Optimization (SEO)-integrated content highlighting industry trends and developments that were featured in 49 print and digital magazine issues across the U.S., Canada, and websites for organizations such as Komatsu, the second-largest heavy equipment manufacturer in the world. From national mining executives to local excavator operators, every individual’s story is significant when I craft their narrative, and it is important to never lose the human element in the creation of a story.
With Manatt’s, I first served as a member of an asphalt crew where I developed hands-on knowledge of the road construction industry. Following my time as an asphalt crew member, I then served as a marketing and communications associate where I was able to apply my newfound familiarity with the industry to develop assets for the company. I authored media through many formats including developing a new newsletter format for Manatt’s Concrete Division through InDesign, taking photographs and editing them in Lightroom and Photoshop, contributing as a writer to the weekly company-wide newsletter, The Mix, and serving as copy editor for Manatt’s quarterly magazine, The Mirror, while applying Manatt’s signature branding.
At the Iowa State Daily, I served as a reporter and later newspaper editor, which included coverage of NCAA Division I athletics, FIFA Women’s World Cup, FIBA World Cup, NBA, Special Olympics, etc. Having covered such a wide range of sports has given me tools to be adaptable to any assignment I’ve been tasked to handle and create engaging content. As editor, I was able to create diverse content that focused on events affecting the Ames and Iowa community. These media publications included traditional newspaper stories, photo galleries, social media posts and a podcast, which was the Daily’s most listened to podcast while I was producer.
I have also held multiple leadership positions through the Iowa Beta Chapter of Phi Kappa Psi. After joining the organization in the spring of 2018, I had grown both as an individual and leader. I served as president of the 115-member chapter during the 2019 calendar year and then as the vice president of development during 2020. As president, I was awarded the Most Valuable Executive Member Award by my peers, and I was also recognized as the Most Valuable Member in fall 2020 by all members of the chapter. During my presidency, the chapter was recognized nationally as the top Phi Psi Chapter in the nation by winning the Grand Chapter award for the first time since our inception in 1913.
I grew up in Waverly, Iowa where I spent my time water skiing, playing baseball, football, and rugby, and participating in my town’s speech team and FFA chapter. In my free time, I enjoy cheering on Iowa State athletics, spending time with my family, participating in outdoors activities and developing my culinary skills by cooking food from across the world. I enjoy reading and am currently taking lessons to develop my Spanish language skills.
I am extremely grateful and proud of the opportunities that have allowed me to become the marketing and communications professional I am today. Moving forward, I am continuing to develop new and expanded skills to further evolve my craft.
